3th Magazine ad of digipak analysis: Kings of Leon

In this digipak, you can see all the band members faces put together to form one big face. Each of their faces has face paint that comes together to form the face an beak of an eagle. You can see the name of the band at the top of the poster flowed by the name of the album underneath the picture with name of the singles in smaller text, and 'out now' in big red font at the bottom. Putting it red was essential for them to do as it makes people realise that they can buy the album now and getting money as soon as possible is important for the band, because after a while the value of the album goes down so people buying the album now means they can get more money. In addition to this, the colour red connotes a sense of attention and errancy as the colour almost demands attention. In comparison to the colours in the rest of the album it really stands out as nearly all of them are monotone colours. Red also connotes excitement which is what the band wants the listeners and buyer to feel when the purchase that album. Colours like this on advertisements are important as they can get people to feel about a certain way about something which can help entice them to buy something.
What I find interesting about the colours on this album is that they use blue, red and yellow. These are all primary colours which is interesting as they all have different meanings but all draw attention because of their standing on the colour wheel. Yellow 'shouts look at me' as it is bright and isn't a colour as commonly used as the others. The use of the red found in the words 'out now' connotes urgency, which is something that will make a viewer and a potential buyer want to purchase it as soon as possible. The use of the colour blue in this digipack is representing the confidence that the band has to put themselves out there and be different. A listener to music that is different and out there is potentially going to look at this advertisement for the band and see it as different, due to the picture and subconsciously think that they are confident and out there because of the use of the blue.
The use of the pictures put together makes a viewer look twice at the album cover, because when they first see their faces they will see it as one, and then realise that the proportions of the face are wrong and then that will lead them to look at the eagle. Eagles are strong birds of prey that can be quite dangerous and are often seen as fearless. This could suggest that the band is a strong fearless group that aren't afraid to sing about things potentially other bands might not sing about. The use of the overlaying of the images, especially the eagle picture, tells a viewer that the band is American as eagles are associated with America as it is used in their media a lot. This could suggest that the album is about going back to the bands routs and about them trying to find who they are, by associating the album cover with a country where that band came together and formed a group. This could also represent that the album is about going back to your animal instincts and unleashing the animal within. This is further suggested by the titles of the singles on the album, 'sex on fire', 'crawl' and 'use somebody'. These songs relate to animalistic behaviour as sexual behaviour is part of instincts for animals (this relates to the song sex on fire). The song 'use somebody' is about betraying someones trust and doing something immoral which is something animals do as they don't have any human morals. Finally, the song 'craw' is similar to animalistic behaviour. This tells a viewer and follower of the band that the album is about going straight back to routs and animalistic behaviours of emotion.
