Genre Specific Analysis: Gorillaz

In this, we see a dodgy city and then the camera moves over the clouds to reveal a building above the clouds called the feel good inc. This represents how in this building at the top you don't have to see the horror that is going down below the city its almost as if ignoring it makes it better/ ignorance is bliss. The light against the building represents hoe rising against everthing and the building almost makes it seem as if anything in this 'Feel Good Inc' tower is possible.

Then in this shot, we get to see inside the building showing how dodgy it is in there too. This illustrates what you see on the outside (the sign that says feel good inc) is not exactly whats on the inside. The red background connotes danger and lust, linking to the sex drugs and rock and roll vibes going on inside the building. In contrast with the characters blue hair, it makes him stand out characterising and illustrating that he is the singer.

Now we see more movement in the room as the song progresses showing people doing things of a somewhat sexual nature. This makes you interpret the title feel good inc into something different. the video is basically the divide from what people think will make them feel good and make them happy compared to what true happiness is.

Now the guy gets up from his chair and starts singing as if to get his message out, its as if he's tired of the same old thing and he wants to make a stand. The vocals in the song almost sound dull as it makes him seem like he is bored which matches with his facial expressions and body language. The microphone further pushes his rebel outlook and the red tones on it as well as in the background pushes the dark feel to this video.

This then starts a butterfly effect where other band members stand up and make a noise to stand up to whats going on. This revolution is further signified by the light behind the man in this shot literally representing that they have seen the light and that now they're casting their own shadow.

This is the main singer see the light also but in a different sense. its like he is looking for something else/ seeing the bigger picture and wanting to get a wider view. The white light of this shot makes him seem innocent an the bars further imply how he feels trapped by society and what they say should make him feel happy. The colour of the shot changing lighter, in contrast, is important as if enhances the change in the song that also happens at this point.

I think the windmill in this shot represents a childhood memory for the protagonist as he sees himself on the floating island playing his acoustic guitar. It's like him looking back and asking himself how it got to this now and he remembers what true happiness feels like and how your childhood just slips away from you. The long shot helps show how far away the windmill is and in contrast with the previous close up the idea of unattainable memories is further implied.

This hot shows how his vision is now clouded and he is not sure what to do and that he is struggling to leave his mark on the world and be himself. This again goes back to the idea that he is trying to stand out as he used a microphone to get his voice heard. The red shown more prominently in the background of this shot compared to the previous shot of him by the window shows how the darkness and danger are starting to overwhelm him again and take over his memories.

The rapper then brings him back to reality literally as he is shown in a non-cartoon form. His dark hood and the lighting used on his face brings the singer back down to earth and takes him almost down to the city down below the tower where crime takes place. His laughs bring the evil themes in the shots together.this gives a feel of gritty reality and implies that adult life is compared to the cartoon singers childhood.

The windmill then comes back and finally show the singer the life he could have chosen but instead, he is trapped where he is and his opportunity and memories slip away. just like a dream it came and went. The close up of this shot is interesting as most of the other close up shots of the singer and I feel like it links the two characters together so you can tell that it was him from the past.

The red on the floor almost looks like he is standing in a pool of blood, this shot further conotes the feel of danger and the idea that the man has dropped a still lit cigarette on the possibly carpeted floor represents how laid back and careless they are. It shows how life isn't as precious now and how as you get older life gets darker. The woman behind his feet almost looks like she is dead making the shot even darker.
This shot is shown at the beginning where the camera zooms in and at the end where zooms out bringing the video into circular shaping. This makes the singer look like he on a throne and has a responsibility to stay where he is even if he wants to escape. the bodies lying around almost life less shows how the people around him are not really living they just think they are. the message of the video is that you shouldn't let life fool you things aren't what they seem life isn't fair and you shouldn't let your dreams fly away.

This resonates with the video I want to make as it has a dark meaning behind it and really makes you think. I like it because its interesting and like all of the other Gorillaz songs Feel Good Inc is in an animated form but that's what makes it stand out compared to other music videos. There is an narrative about it and it has dark under tones which is something I would like to achieve in my own music videos.
